EFCC officials contribute to crimes, says Oba of Benin — Nigeria — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

The Beninese monarch, Omo N’Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR, on Monday accused some unscrupulous officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of allegedly contributing to crimes.

Oba Ewuare II, who made the allegations when he received the new Zonal Director of the EFCC in Benin, Mr. Effa Okim, at his palace in Benin City, Edo State, charged the Commission to fight crime without fear or favor.

The monarch cited a particular criminal investigation involving unnamed former Palace officials who were arrested for fraud and handed over to the EFCC in Benin for investigation and prosecution.

The Oba alleged that some EFCC agents allegedly treated Oba Ewuare II’s petition with kid gloves, and that the alleged culprits were released after giving them slaps on the wrist some years ago.

The monarch, who did not give further details about the unnamed former palace officials, questioned why EFCC investigators would sweep blatant evidence of fraud against them under the carpet.

The traditional ruler said: “We wish to draw your attention to one or two gray areas in your operations.

“No matter how much you try to support them from the Palace, this was a young woman leading this team from the Palace. It was very difficult.

“They (EFCC) always come and speak gloriously. In fact, when it comes time to help them, they seem to listen to others.

“What we said is that they follow the instructions of the highest bidder.

“You know I’m known for telling the truth. But I wasn’t happy with some of the things that happened with your predecessor.

“We receive news from everywhere. When we try to help the EFCC. I even wrote a letter to the president at the time, now out of office.

“I even sent an emissary to talk to him about certain elements of Edo State, especially the Palace.

“How can the EFCC boys, especially this girl, behave like this? If I were asked to comment on his performance rating, I would give him zero. I don’t know if she was doing the work of the EFCC or if she was just dancing to the beat of the people giving her money.

“At the time we were trying to help the EFCC, the reports we constantly received were negative and I was not happy about it. »

The monarch, however, said the new EFCC Chairman, Mr. Olanipekun Olukayode, is on the path to greatness if he continually demonstrates astuteness in office.

Earlier in his speech, the new Zonal Director of the EFCC in Benin, Mr. Effa Okim, called on Oba Ewuare II to support advocacy against financial crimes as Edo State ranked second behind the state of Lagos in the Nigeria Financial Crime Index.
