Police: Honomu man drowned earlier this month

Police say a man died from accidental drowning on May 2 at Kolekole Beach Park.

The victim was identified by police Monday as Chad Gilbert Keala Shimaoka, 47, of Honomu.

An HPD statement released Monday – the first on the incident – said an autopsy performed on May 7 indicated Shimaoka died of accidental drowning.

“I will miss you brother, rest easy love…Chad Shimaoka,” Shimaoka’s friend posted on Facebook the day of the drowning.

Shimaoka’s Facebook page indicated that he was single, an avid fisherman and had attended the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

According to police, when officers arrived at the scene shortly after 1 p.m. on May 2, bystanders were performing CPR on Shimaoka.

Witnesses reported seeing Shimaoka and a friend enter the water with kayaks, and Shimaoka fell from his kayak on at least two occasions. Witnesses reported seeing him wave his arms in the air in distress before floating, seemingly lifeless, on the surface of the water.

Witnesses entered the water to retrieve Shimaoka and brought him to shore, where they immediately began CPR.

Shimaoka was taken to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2 p.m.
